Friends Auxiliary: Lecture & Luncheon Series – PART 3
Gary Monroe – An Irresistible Urge to Create: Florida’s Outsider Artists
Boca Raton Marriott at Boca Center
5150 Town Center Cir
Boca Raton, FL 33486
Outsider art is a topic of growing interest within the national dialogue. Gary Monroe, long a collector of the art of Florida’s self-taught artists, discusses the life and work of such under-recognized artists as Purvis Young, Aurelia “Mama” Johnson, and George Voronovsky. An exhibition of selections from the Monroe Family Collection will be on display at the Boca Raton Museum of Art beginning Jun. 30, 2020.
Gary Monroe received his M.F.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is a Florida native and accomplished photographer, author, and curator. Exemplified by his guest curation of photographs and material culture for last season’s Imagining Florida: History and Myth in the Sunshine State exhibition and his seminal books on the Florida Highwaymen, Monroe’s work explores uncharted cultural territories that constitute a meaningful part of our arts and social history.
