Let’s talk grouper, join us for a great presentation at Force-E Boca Raton
Divers love seeing Goliath Grouper on the wrecks and reefs here in South Florida, and while they are protected from harvest, our local government agencies are doing more research to make sure this protection stays in place.
Join us on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at the Boca Raton Force-E Dive Center at 6:30 pm for a fascinating presentation by FWC Researcher Derek Cox. He will be talking about the habitat use and movement patterns of Juvenile Goliath Grouper in the Southeastern Florida which will help aid in the protection of the species in the future.
Goliath Groupers begin their lives inshore using mangroves and artificial structure as nursery habitat and transition to reefs and wrecks offshore as they mature. The research group at FWC, with assistance from local anglers, is using acoustic transmitters alongside traditional tagging and genetic analysis to investigate how Goliath Grouper utilize the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon as juveniles and then monitoring their shift to offshore habitat as they develop into adults.
