Noted Author and Professor Gary Monroe to Speak at Opening Reception

Boca Raton, FL (December 12, 2018) – There is an ever-growing focus on local arts and culture in West Boca and the Levis JCC’s Phyllis and Harvey Sandler Center is at the forefront of this enriching movement.  On Sunday, January 6 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., the Sandler Center will kick-off its January Art Exhibition and Florida Fresh Speaker Series during an Opening Reception with Noted Author and Professor Gary Monroe for a talk on The Highway Men: Florida’s African American Landscape Painters.  The opening reception will also include a live painting and auction, and a meet-and-greet with distinguished artists Al Black and Kelvin Hair.  Monroe’s talk will begin at 7 p.m.  The Florida Highwaymen Exhibition will be on display from January 6 – 30 and will include nearly 40 art pieces, some of which will be available for purchase.

“Named The Highwaymen in 1994, their art has come back with a vengeance, the paintings were then dusted-off, reconsidered and have become recognized as the visual legacy of modern Florida,” said Gary Monroe.

Having written the seminal book that introduced the Highwaymen to the world, Gary Monroe successfully nominated them into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.  These self-taught artists, now acclaimed and widely collected, painted idyllic versions of the Florida landscape and sold their creations door-to-door during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

Kelvin Hair, son of original ‘Highwaymen’ artist Alfred Hair, will be creating a painting live at the event on January 6.  This original piece willbe auctioned off to benefit the JCC Sandler Center’s Rosen Museum Gallery.  “All Floridians can benefit from arts and culture. It preserves Florida’s rich history and shows the world Florida’s creative abilities, and without those abilities you can not compete in the ever-changing world we live in,” said Kelvin Hair.

Whether it is fine art, theater, literary events, film, or adult learning that is of interest, the Levis JCC’s Sandler Center is perpetuating a new standard and is piquing the curiosity of both local residents and those that reside far beyond county lines.

The opening reception and Art Exhibition are free and open to the public.
