‘American Jewish New Year in JazzTime’ is First Concert in Series of Four

BOCA RATON, Fla. (August 22, 2019) ─ The Adolph & Rose Levis JCC is excited to announce that it will serve as the new home for accordionist and musical director Aaron Kula and his acclaimed nine-member Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra (KCJO) during the 2019-2020 Cultural Arts season.  Together, they will host The Kultur Festival, which is comprised of four signature concerts filled with entertaining songs, stories and jazzed up arrangements.  ‘American Jewish New Year in JazzTime’ is the first of the four concerts and is scheduled for Sunday, September 22 at 3 pm at Zinman Hall.  Tickets start at $30.

Kula and (KCJO) will be joined by guest vocalists Kunya Rowley and Mya Bodnick for their annual ‘American Jewish New Year in JazzTime’ concert.  Also performing is award-winning storyteller Caren Schnur Neile.  The performance includes a powerful mix of transformed high holiday congregational and cantorial melodies set to spirited harmonies influenced by American jazz, African-American Spirituals, swing and old-world Klezmer.  All arrangements are written by Kula specifically for the band and singers.  Songs will include “Avinu Malkeynu” (Lord Our Father), made popular by singer Barbara Streisand; “Rosh Hashana Stomp,” “Tango Kaddish,” “Kol Nidrei Blues,” “Oseh Shalom Salsa,” and “Rebbe’s Boogie Woogie” based on a nigun composed by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.

“The Americanization of Jewish music and culture began more than 350 years ago when the first Jewish immigrants came to America from Brazil,” said Kula. “Our performance celebrates the intersection of tradition and innovation, so the concert experience is personal and relevant for a contemporary audience.”

The son of the late Cantor Morton Kula, Kula and his five brothers grew up hearing their father sing cantorial and congregational melodies to thousands of people in the synagogue on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.  The concert is open to the entire community regardless of race, religion, or denomination, and all are invited to a universal celebration of the Jewish New Year.

Other signature concerts in the series include ‘A Very Jewish Concert on Christmas Day’ scheduled for Wednesday, December 25 at 3 pm, ‘Miami Beach Rhumba’ scheduled for Sunday, February 23 at 2:00 pm, and Jewish Chamber Music Concert scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 pm.  Series Pricing available.
